Irak – Les Peshmergas soutenus par l’Unité de Protection Populaire (la branche armée des Kurdes syriens) ont mené de rudes combats à Mossoul , la capitale auto-déclarée des djihadistes de l’Etat islamique depuis le mois de juin.
L’intention des Kurdes est de reprendre la ville – qu’ils considèrent comme la capitale historique du Kurdistan. Près de 500 mercenaires étrangers, essentiellement des Turcs, ont pris part aux combats de Mossoul dans les rangs djihadistes.
Les positions restent fragiles tant pour les Kurdes que pour les djihadistes. Les combattants kurdes sont à nouveau présents dans les villes de Zumar et Sinjar, qu’ils avaient perdues durant le week-end.
500 Yézidis ont été tués par les djihadistes à Sinjar et dans les montagnes environnantes. 500 femmes ont par ailleurs été enlevées pour être utilisées comme esclaves sexuelles.
15 000 vétérans Peshmergas auraient repris les armes pour combattre les islamiste.
D’autre part, la plus grande ville chrétienne d’Irak, Bakhdida, plus connue sous le nom de Qaraqosh, à 14 km à l’est de Mossoul, comptant une population de 50 000 personnes, et qui venait d’accueillir les chrétiens fuyant Mossoul, est tombée aux mains des djihadistes, provoquant un nouvel exil.
