L’affaire de Charlottesville est devenue le prétexte pour se livrer aux Etats-Unis à une purge politiquement correcte dont on ne voit pas la fin. Après la chasse aux monuments confédérés, puis la critique des monuments et noms de parcs et d’avenues dédiés à George Washington, c’est maintenant au Maréchal Pétain de faire les frais de cette nouvelle vague de terrorisme intellectuel.
Le maire de New York, Bill de Blasio, chantre du multiculturalisme, du métissage et du lobby LGBT, a annoncé via son compte Twitter son intention d’effacer la plaque en granit posée en 1931 en l’honneur du Maréchal Pétain, venu défiler en tant que vainqueur de la bataille de Verdun avec le général Pershing, considéré comme le héros américain de l’engagement des Etats-Unis dans la première guerre mondiale.
Cette plaque est fixée dans un quartier de Broadway surnommé le « Canyon des héros » qui compte plusieurs centaines de plaques commémoratives gravées dans cette section de la pointe sud de Manhattan.
Plus largement, Bill de Blasio a annoncé un réexamen de tous les symboles de la ville qui pourraient évoquer « le racisme ou la haine ».
