Mgr Juan del Rio Martin, archevêque militaire d’Espagne a déclaré :

« C’est un fait indéniable que l’Église catholique dans le monde est confrontée à deux fondamentalismes forts: l’islamisme et le laïcisme. D’une part, nous savons que dans les pays à majorité musulmane, les minorités religieuses souffrent d’intolérance et de discrimination sociale. Mais d’un autre côté, nous avons un laïcisme exacerbé qui, étant principalement une école de pensée, cherche, entre autre, à isoler dans la sphère privée, l’enseignement de la religion, supprimant la dimension spirituelle de la personne ou la confondant avec un simple « épiphénomène » sociologique ou psychologique, et s’opposant à l’aspect social de la religion, arrivant même à nier la liberté de l’Eglise et à la réduire à un simple partenariat privé ».
