A l’occasion du cinq-centième anniversaire de la réforme protestante, le pape François a tenu à s’associer, le 31 octobre 2016, à la célébration officielle organisée en Suède par la Fédération luthérienne mondiale. Et ce, après avoir déclaré quelques mois auparavant que « Luther ne s’est pas trompé ».
Luther, pourtant excommunié en 1520 par un prédécesseur de François, serait-il donc aujourd’hui réhabilité ? Le pape Léon X aurait-il eu tort de le déclarer hérétique dans la bulle Exsurge Domine ? Catholiques et protestants seraient-ils aujourd’hui d’accord sur l’essentiel ? Faudrait-il revisiter l’histoire du luthéranisme ? Autant de questions qui ne peuvent manquer de se poser à la conscience des fidèles de l’Eglise catholique.
C’est pour les aider à y répondre que ce livre examine à nouveau l’histoire et les points principaux du luthéranisme. Loin de la légende et de la mystification idéologique, le vrai visage de Luther se révèle de lui-même, à travers les pièces d’un dossier inattendu.
Né en 1966, l’abbé Jean-Michel Gleize, prêtre de la Fraternité Sacerdotale Saint-Pie X, enseigne depuis 1996 l’ecclésiologie et la théologie fondamentale au séminaire d’Ecône, en Suisse. Il a publié plusieurs textes sur Luther que l’on peut retrouver dans notre dossier consacré à « l’ennemi de la grâce de Jésus-Christ« .
