Le turc est devenu une « langue officielle de l’UE » avant le moindre vote sur l’adhésion
Le Parlement européen a voté par 375 voix contre 133 l’initiative du président chypriote Nicos Anastasiades, qui a demandé à la présidence néerlandaise de l’Union d’ajouter le turc aux 24 langues officielles de l’UE, dans l’espoir de faciliter les efforts en faveur de la réunification de l’île.
Cette décision – qui va gonfler de 31 millions d’euros le budget annuel de l’UE – a rendu furieux les opposants, qui y voient une nouvelle preuve que l’accession de la Turquie à l’UE est « pratiquement assurée ».
En cas d’adhésion, la Turquie serait le deuxième pays le plus peuplé de l’UE après l’Allemagne, voire le premier après 2018 selon les projections. Ce qui, dans le système de majorité qualifiée, lui accorderait une prédominance.
Le revenu par habitant de la Turquie représente à peine un quart de celui du Royaume-Uni, ce qui fait craindre une immigration économique massive.
David Davis, partisan du Brexit et ancien parlementaire de l’opposition, a déclaré : « En appuyant l’adhésion de la Turquie – un pays aux frontières poreuses avec l’Irak, l’Iran et la Syrie – l’UE n’aide pas vraiment à la sécurité de la Grande-Bretagne ».
C’est la première fois qu’une langue autre que celles des Etats membres accède au statut de langue officielle de l’UE.
