En 1933, la propagande du régime national-socialiste allemand attaque grossièrement la Bible. En face, Mgr Faulhaber (1869-1952), archevêque de Münich, rappelle solennellement la doctrine catholique sur l’ancien Testament en cinq sermons prononcés dans la grande église Saint-Michel, aux quatre dimanches de l’Avent (3, 10, 17 et 24 décembre) puis le soir de la Saint-Sylvestre.
Ces prédications sont ensuite réunies en un volume, intitulé Judentum, Christentum, Germanentum, et diffusé sous le manteau, car sa vente en librairie a été interdite par le gouvernement nazi. Il est traduit en français par le chanoine Raymond Dulac.
Le 14 mars 1937, l’encyclique Mit brennender Sorge viendra confirmer et appuyer l’enseignement de Mgr Faulhaber. Tout en présentant une très riche synthèse sur les rapports entre l’ancien et le nouveau Testament, Mgr Faulhaber répond à des objections qui nous restent familières, puisqu’après avoir été héritées de Voltaire, elles semblent avoir été léguées par les nazis à la franc-maçonnerie, à l’islam et à la prétendue « Nouvelle Droite ».
C’est dire la grande actualité de ces sermons.
