Ce dimanche 4 janvier le pape François, lors du traditionnel Angélus, a donné la liste des cardinaux qui seront créés au consistoire extraordinaire du 14 février prochain.

Le critère qui saute aux yeux « est celui de l’universalité », comme l’a affirmé P. Frederico Lombardi. En effet, seuls 5 évêques sont européens.  Parmi eux, un français : Mgr Dominique Mamberti, Préfet du Tribunal suprême de la Signature apostolique qui n’est autre que le remplaçant du cardinal Raymond Leo Burke.

Ensuite il s’agit de Mgr Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente, Patriarche de Lisbonne (Portugal) ; Mgr Edoardo Menichelli, archev. d’Ancône-Osimo (Italie) ; Mgr Francesco Montenegro, archev. d’Agrigente (Italie) ; Mgr Ricardo Blázquez Pérez, archev. de Valladolid (Espagne).

Trois viennent d’Amérique latine : Mgr Alberto Suárez Inda, archev. de Morelia (Mexique) ; Mgr Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet, S.D.B., archev. de Montevideo (Uruguay) ; Mgr José Luis Lacunza Maestrojuán, O.A.R., év. de David (Panama).

Trois d’Asie : Mgr Pierre Nguyên Văn Nhon, archev. de Hà Nôi (Viêt Nam) ; Mgr Charles Maung Bo, S.D.B., archev. de Rangoon (Myanmar – Birmanie) ; Mgr Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij, archev. de Bangkok (Thaïlande).

Deux d’Afrique : Mgr Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, C.M., archev. d’Addis Abeba (Ethiopie) ; Mgr Arlindo Gomes Furtado, év. de Santiago de Cabo Verde (Archipel du Cap Vert).

Enfin 2 pour l’Océanie : Mgr John Atcherley Dew, archev. de Wellington (Nouvelle Zélande) ; Mgr Soane Patita Paini Mafi, év. de Tonga (Iles Tonga).

Il faut souligner qu’aucun évêque de l’Amérique du Nord a été nommé. Cela nous donne 15 cardinaux électeurs puisque la limite d’âge est de 80 ans, ce qui porte le nombre de cardinaux au-dessus du nombre traditionnel de 120 cardinaux (seuls 10 cardinaux auront plus de 80 ans d’ici février 2015).

Le pape a voulu nommé aussi 5 évêques émérites, cardinaux non électeurs, pour récompenser leur engagement au sein de l’Eglise : Mgr José de Jesús Pimiento Rodríguez, archev. émérite de Manizales (Colombie, le plus âgé, à 95 ans) ; Mgr Luigi De Magistris, archev. tit. de Nova, Pro-Pénitentier majeur émérite (Italie) ; Mgr Karl-Joseph Rauber, archev. tit. de Giubalziana, nonce apostolique, retiré chez les soeurs de Schoenstatt (Allemagne) ; Mgr Luis Héctor Villalba, archev. émérite de  Tucumán (Argentine) ; Mgr Júlio Duarte Langa, archev. émérite de  Xai-Xai (Mozambique).
