Le livre que Roger Moorhouse, historien britannique spécialisé dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale, a écrit au sujet de l’alliance entre Staline et Hitler, vient d’être traduit en français et publié chez Buchet-Chastel.
C’est un fait trop souvent occulté : le 23 août 1939, Staline leva son verre à la santé de Hitler. Même si les deux dictateurs ne devaient jamais se rencontrer, l’accord forgé ce jour-là allait changer le monde. Connu sous le nom de pacte germano-soviétique, il devait rester en vigueur moins de deux ans, mais il n’en fut pas moins un des événements saillants de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ce pacte négocié par Molotov et Ribbentrop mena directement au déclenchement des hostilités contre la Pologne. Avec la connivence de Hitler, Staline occupa, puis annexa les Etats baltes ainsi que la province roumaine de Bessarabie. Puis ce fut au tour de la Finlande d’être envahie et conquise par l’Armée rouge. Quand Hitler se tourna vers l’ouest pour envahir d’abord la Scandinavie, puis les Pays-Bas, la Belgique et la France, Staline lui adressa ses félicitations. En coulisses, dans le même temps, Allemands et Soviétiques échangèrent secrets, projets, technologies et matières premières. Au point que les Britanniques et les Français envisagèrent même une attaque préventive contre l’Union soviétique en 1940.
Les écrits d’après-guerre sur le pacte germano-soviétique ont généralement répété les justifications données par le Kremlin au lendemain du conflit, à savoir que Staline cherchait simplement à gagner du temps. Toutefois, cette interprétation, que continuent à colporter des apologistes du communisme, ne cadre pas avec les faits, comme le démontrent les archives qui ont servi à rédiger ce livre.
