Cette décision a été motivée par la mort de plusieurs dizaines de militaires nigériens tombés dans une attaque de la secte islamiste Boko Haram à Karamga le samedi dernier.
En effet, selon un témoin joint par l’AFP : « L’armée nigérienne a perdu 48 soldats et 36 sont portés disparus ». Cette même source ajoute que « des militaires ont fui et sont en train de regagner la localité de Bosso voisine. » Mais selon une autre source le bilan serait de 80 soldats tués et d’une trentaine de disparus.
Face à ce drame, le gouvernement nigérien a décrété un deuil national de 3 jours allant du 29 avril au 1er mai 2015 annulant ainsi toutes les manifestations prévues bien avant.
Le 1er mai des prières collectives ont été organisées en mémoire des disparus.
