Avec 17.500 salariés, des milliards de dollars de chiffre d’affaires annuel et une implantation dans quarante-six pays, Monsanto est le leader mondial des OGM, mais aussi l’une des entreprises les plus controversées de l’histoire industrielle. Production de PCB (pyralène), de polystyrène, d’herbicides dévastateurs (comme l’« agent orange » pendant la guerre du Viêtnam) ou d’hormones de croissance bovine et laitière (interdites en Europe) : depuis sa création en 1901, la firme a accumulé les procès en raison de la toxicité de ses produits. Grâce à la commercialisation de semences transgéniques, conçues notamment pour résister aux épandages de Roundup, l’herbicide le plus vendu au monde, elle prétend vouloir faire reculer les limites des écosystèmes pour le bien de l’humanité. Qu’en est-il exactement ? Quels sont les objectifs de cette entreprise, qui, après avoir longtemps négligé les impacts écologiques et humains de ses activités, s’intéresse tout à coup au problème de la faim dans le monde au point de se donner des allures d’organisation humanitaire ? Alors que le nom de Monsanto est pointé du doigt dans l’affaire des microcéphalies du Brésil erronément mises d’abord sur le dos du virus Zika, ce reportage est à (re)voir.
