Le secrétaire adjoint de la Conférence Épiscopale de Colombie, Pedro Mercado, a exigé, le 06 février 2016, des autorités du gouvernement du pays, d’essayer à tout prix de prévenir la contagion du virus Zika et en finir avec sa transmission au lieu de faire la promotion de l’avortement et prétendre que c’est la seule solution.
Depuis le début de la propagation du virus au Brésil, les associations en faveur de l’avortement telles que le Planned Parenthood ou la Women’s Link Worldwide en Colombie et des organismes de l’ONU, ont demandé aux différents gouvernements d’Amérique Latine d’utiliser le crime d’avortement comme un moyen de prévention.
Pedro Mercado a souligné que « la priorité doit être d’exterminer les moustiques qui transmettent la maladie et ne pas exterminer des enfants innocents. Il faut lancer urgemment des moyens de prévention ».
Le Ministre de la Santé de Colombie, Alejandro Gaviria, a déclaré à son tour, en dépit d’être un partisan de l’avortement libre, que l’avortement comme moyen de prévention contre le virus n’est pas du tout la solution au problème. « Ce n’est pas une recommandation digne de la santé publique », a-t-il ajouté.
Pendant la deuxième semaine de février, la presse colombienne a diffusé que le premier cas de microcéphalie lié au virus Zika dans le pays était confirmé. Cependant, le Ministère de la Santé a ratifié que l’avortement ne serait pas proposé comme mesure de prévention.
