Angela Merkel a appelé à une interdiction de la burqa en Allemagne, son ministre de la Défense a refusé de porter le hijab lors de sa visite officielle en Arabie Saoudite.
Ursula von der Leyen a dit que, bien qu’elle respecte les « coutumes et traditions » du pays », elle ne porterait pas les vêtements islamiques habituellement requis pour toutes les femmes dans l’État du Golfe.
«Aucune femme dans ma délégation ne sera tenue de porter le hijab. Le choix d’une tenue vestimentaire est autant celui des femmes que des hommes. » a-t-elle ajouté, exprimant son agacement devant la pression exercée sur les femmes en visite officielle en Arabie Saoudite.
Le ministre était à Ryad jeudi pour une rencontre avec son homologue saoudien, Mohammad bin Salman al Saud, le Prince héritier adjoint. Ils ont discuté du soutien allemand à la formation des officiers saoudiens.
Alors que le prince était habillé en tenue traditionnelle saoudienne, Mme Von der Leyen portait un costume bleu foncé pour l’occasion.
Certains Saoudiens ont condamné la ministre de la Défense sur Twitter, interprétant sa tenue vestimentaire comme une insulte à l’Arabie Saoudite
Madame Von der Leyen n’est pas la première femme occidentale à refuser de se conformer au code vestimentaire strict du Royaume. Michelle Obama, la première dame américaine, avait suscité l’indignation en y allant tête-nue en compagnie de son mari.
