Au Royaume Uni, le groupe de défense homosexuel Metro a diligenté une enquête payée par le fonds de recherche Big Lottery funds et l’Université de Greenwich. Elle s’intitule Youthchances (chances pour les jeunes) pour améliorer la vie des gays, lesbiennes, bisexuels, transgenres. C’est la plus importante qui ait jamais été effectuée sur ce sujet en Angleterre. Elle a porté sur 7.000 jeunes gays de 16 à 25 ans ; tandis que le groupe des hétérosexuels représentait 11 % de l’ensemble des sondés. Les conclusions sont étonnantes.
Il apparaît que 52 % des jeunes de 16 à 25 ans se disant homosexuels, se sont déjà automutilés. Cette proportion est de 32% chez les hétérosexuels. Sur ce tout dernier chiffre, le National Health Service (Service National de la Santé) qui a fait ses propres statistiques diverge et l’estime à 18 % sans doute ayant pris un échantillonnage plus vaste que Metro.
Par ailleurs 42 % des gays ont eu besoin d’une aide médicale pour dépression ou anxiété. La proportion est de 29 % chez les hétérosexuels.
40 % des jeunes LGBT disent avoir pensé au suicide alors que les hétéros n’y ont pensé qu’à 28 % (21 % dans le cadre du National Health Service).
Comme en France l’explication de telles différences est toujours la même. Les jeunes homos font l’objet du mépris des autres. Il y aurait une intimidation et un manque d’acceptation des homos par les hétéros ; ce qui crée chez les LGBT «un climat de peur et d’hostilité».Or un spécialiste américain, le Dr Michael L. Brown, auteur d’un ouvrage sur le sujet intitulé A Queer Thing Happened in América, donne une toute autre explication : « J’ai entendu des histoires personnelles de nombreux hommes et femmes qui sont revenus de l’homosexualité. Ils témoignaient de la douleur vécue dans le passé en rapport avec les pratiques malsaines auxquelles ils participaient. Ils ont expliqué leur libération et la vie et que ces personnes ont vécues quand elles ont cessé de se considérer comme gays ».
