Le monde entier connaît aujourd’hui la ville martyre de Maaloula, en Syrie, dont la population majoritairement chrétienne a été atrocement persécutée par les islamistes du Front al-Nosra. Les habitants n’ayant pas fui ont été massacrés et les églises saccagées. La ville étant à nouveau sous le contrôle de l’armée syrienne régulière, les habitants reviennent peu à peu vivre sur leur terre natale où tout est à reconstruire.
Robert Ménard s’est rendu sur place afin de sceller le jumelage qu’il avait annoncé entre Béziers et Maaloula. Le maire de Béziers et son homologue syrien de Maaloula ont en outre signé un accord de coopération qui aidera la ville syrienne meurtrie à reconstruire des logements, à améliorer le système de traitement et d’assainissement des eaux, à rouvrir l’orphelinat et à restaurer l’institut d’enseignement de la langue araméenne.
De retour de son voyage, Robert Ménard a déclaré au journal Midi libre : « La France se trompe vis-à-vis de la Syrie. Il est impossible de renvoyer dos à dos le régime de Béchar el-Assad et celui de ces barbares qui assassinent et détruisent. Il y a aujourd’hui une obligation à défendre un régime, certes critiquable, mais qui est le seul à pouvoir faire barrage à Daesh. »
