Cet avertissement aux dirigeants européens s’explique par le fait que beaucoup d’étrangers viennent combattre aux côtés des islamistes somaliens Shebab.
« Des combattants étrangers, dont certains Européens, sont sur le terrain dans la Corne de l’Afrique », a averti le vice-président kényan, William Ruto, à l’occasion d’une conférence internationale sur la lutte contre l’extrémisme. « S’ils échappent à nos forces de sécurité, ils retourneront dans leur pays d’origine afin d’y poursuivre leurs brutales activités », a-t-il poursuivi.
Si aucun chiffre n’a été fourni pour quantifier la présence de jihadistes étrangers dans la Corne de l’Afrique, de récentes actualités ont mis en lumière leur existence. Le 15 juin, les autorités kényanes avaient annoncé la présence d’un jihadiste britannique parmi des militants Shebab tués lors d’une attaque contre une base militaire kényane.
Premier britannique jihadiste tué au Kenya, Thomas Evans, 25 ans, originaire du Buckinghamshire, dans le sud de l’Angleterre, avait rejoint les shebab en 2011 après s’être converti à l’islam à 19 ans, selon la presse britannique.
Une vidéo apparemment tournée par Evans lui-même diffusée jeudi par la télévision britannique ITV avant l’assaut où il a péri montrait des militants en plein combat. La vidéo montre également des militants se donner l’accolade avant l’attaque, parmi lesquels semble figurer un jihadiste allemand, identifié comme Andreas Muller rapporte la même source.
Les islamistes shebab ont longtemps été un fort pôle d’attraction pour les volontaires occidentaux au jihad. Mais la montée en puissance des théâtres d’action irakien et syrien a toutefois éclipsé le front somalien pour les jihadistes européens, selon les experts.
