Le Grand Mufti de l’Arabie saoudite, Abdulaziz Al Cheikh, a décrété une interdiction de la pratique du jeu d’échecs dans le pays au motif qu’il est un gaspillage de temps et d’argent et entretient la haine entre les joueurs.
Le mufti a annoncé ce précepte religieux au cours d’un programme de télévision en réponse aux demandes d’un spectateur. L’ecclésiastique a jugé que « les échecs sont une œuvre de Satan.».
La condamnation du Grand Mufti ne signifie pas pour autant l’interdiction du jeu d’échecs dans le royaume arabe, mais les associations pratiquant cette discipline ont exprimé leur inquiétude face à ces déclarations qui ont eu lieu juste avant un tournoi majeur.
Le grand maître d’échecs britannique Nigel Short, a déploré la «situation délicate dans laquelle se trouvent les associations saoudiennes » après cette fatwa. « Même (le grand ayatollah iranien) Khomeiny avait fait marche arrière après avoir voulu interdire les échecs en Iran« , a-t-il rappelé. Le président de la commission juridique de l’Association saoudienne des Echecs, Musa Bin Thaily, a déclaré que les échecs n’ont absolument rien à voir avec un jeu de profit, et a expliqué que son association organise plus de 70 tournois dans le pays arabe avec l’assistance de hauts responsables du gouvernement. Il a même fait remarquer sur son compte Twitter, qu’en Arabie Saoudite, la pièce du roi n’est pas surmontée d’une croix, mais du croissant de l’Islam.
