La France est un pays qui en athlétisme a des performances honorables mais sans plus. Son point fort dans cette discipline est le saut à la perche, où la France a eu de nombreux records du monde et de médailles olympiques.

Le décathlon n’était pas une discipline où la France avait particulièrement brillée jusqu’à l’arrivée de Kevin Mayer. Depuis son premier titre mondial chez les cadets en 2009, il est le numéro 1 mondial de cette discipline depuis 2017. En 2016, il avait décroché la médaille d’argent aux Jeux Olympiques de Rio, devancé par l’Américain Ashton James Eaton, tout en réalisant la meilleure performance au poids et à la perche. Il s’agissait de la seconde médaille française aux JO dans cette discipline, après celle du même métal obtenue par Ignace Heinrich aux olympiades de Londres en 1948.

Lors du Décastar de Talence, le 16 septembre, il a remporté la véritable épreuve reine de l’athlétisme, le décathlon : quatre courses (100 mètres, 110 mètres haies, 400 mètres), trois sauts (hauteur, longueur et perche) et trois lancers (javelot, disque et poids) : dix épreuves, autant de techniques à maîtriser. Pour avoir une chance de briller, un décathlonien doit être puissant sans être trop massif, il doit être explosif et endurant, n’avoir aucun point faible et, si possible, deux ou trois points forts. Pour les sauts et les lancers, seuls trois essais sont permis, la marge d’erreur est donc très limitée. Mayer en sait quelque chose : en août, il avait marqué 0 point en saut en longueur et donc abandonné.

Il courut le 100 mètres en 10’55 (record personnel), saut en longueur à 7m80 record personnel), un poids lancé à 16 mètres, un saut en hauteur à 2m05, un 400 mètres couru en 48’42 et un 110 mètres haies en 13’75, un disque lancé à 50m54, un saut à la perche de 5m45, un javelot lancé à 71m90 et pour finir, un 1500 mètres parcouru en 4 minutes 36 (il lui fallait 4 minutes 49 pour devenir recordman du monde et remporter la compétition. Au total, il marqua 9126 points, premier athlète à passer la barre des 9100 points. Il enlève à Eaton le titre de recordman du monde qu’il détenait depuis 2012. Le premier recordman du monde fut l’Estonien Aleksanger Klumberg en 1922 avec 6087 points. Ce sportif mourut prématurément en 1958 suite aux années passées au goulag quand l’Estonie fut envahie et annexée par l’URSS.

Le palmarès de Kevin Mayer est le suivant : champion du monde cadet (2009), junior (2010), champion du monde en plein air (2017) et en salle (2018), champion d’Europe junior (2011), champion d’Europe en salle (2017), vice-champion d’Europe en salle (2013 et en plein air (2014)), vainqueur de la coupe d’Europe (2013), de l’Aroña pruebas combinadas (2015) et du Décastar (2018) et bien sûr vice-champion olympique (2016).
