L’abbé Edgeworth de Firmont (1745-1807), fils d’un pasteur converti au catholicisme et installé en France, exerça son apostolat dans le Paris pré-révolutionnaire et révolutionnaire. Le 17 mars 1791, il devenait le directeur spirituel de Madame Elisabeth de France qui recherchait un prêtre non assermenté pour exercer ce ministère. Il le resta jusqu’à l’émeute du 10 août 1792 et l’emprisonnement de la princesse au Temple.
Le Roi Louis XVI, bien que ne le connaissant pas personnellement, lui fit demander s’il consentirait à l’assister à ses derniers moments dans le cas où il serait condamné à mort. L’abbé accepta tout en sachant qu’il risquait sa vie. C’est un témoin de première main qui nous donne ses impressions de la Révolution et, surtout, nous raconte avec autant d’émotion que de retenue les derniers moments du Roi.
Après la mort de Louis XVI, l’abbé Edgeworth de Firmont passa trois années caché. Ensuite, le comte de Provence, futur Louis XVIII, le choisit comme confesseur pendant son exil itinérant dans l’Europe. Il resta son confesseur jusqu’à ce que le typhus emporte l’abbé en 1807.
