Après 28 ans de carrière d’officier dans la Marine, Catherine Bertrand-Gannerie se consacre à l’écriture et est déjà l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages historiques ainsi que de romans pour la jeunesse.
C’est sous cette forme d’un roman pour la jeunesse, accessible à partir de 7 ans mais qui peut se lire à tout âge, que Catherine Bertrand-Gannerie rend un bel hommage à ces très nombreux prêtres et religieux qui ont servi pendant la Première guerre mondiale en tant qu’aumôniers ou combattants, ainsi que ces religieuses qui ont aussi œuvré en tant qu’infirmières ou ambulancières durant ce conflit sanglant.
Rappelons que près d’un millier d’aumôniers catholiques ont accompagné en soutane les soldats sur les champs de bataille et que, dans le cadre de l’anticléricalisme gouvernemental de l’époque, 4.000 séminaristes, 7.000 religieux et novices et 19.000 prêtres ont été envoyés sur le front en tant que combattants.
A travers les personnages romancés du père Auguste, du frère Philibert et de sœur Armande, c’est la réalité vécue par les hommes et femmes de Dieu durant la Grande Guerre qui est décrite dans ce livre édifiant, soulignant à quel point il fut réconfortant pour beaucoup de nos soldats de pouvoir se confesser et recevoir une bénédiction dans ces heures tragiques.
