Le Cardinal Sean O’Malley était l’un des espoirs des catholiques conservateurs. Les communautés Ecclesia Dei s’enthousiasmaient que ce prélat ait célébré une messe de Requiem dans le rite latin traditionnel. Cela se passait il y a une quinzaine de mois à Washington. Depuis, les espoirs se sont envolés.
Notons que le cardinal O’Malley est le seul membre nord-américain du Cabinet que le pape François a formé pour le conseiller.
Mais comment expliquer, comment justifier, comment accepter que le cardinal O’Malley se soit fait « ré-affirmer » son baptême avec une « onction » donnée par une femme pasteur méthodiste dans un temple protestant de Sudbury dans le Massachusetts ? Le journal local, le Patriot-Ledger, donne la parole à cette femme pasteur du culte méthodiste : «Ce qui m’a surprise n’était pas tellement que je lui administre l’onction, c’est surtout qu’il a accepté de la recevoir de ma main – sur sa demande – , en tant que femme dans le ministère. »
Les faits se sont déroulés dans le cadre d’un service religieux de « l’église Méthodiste Unie de Sudbury » dont les fidèles ont été invités à recevoir une goutte d’eau « consacrée » sur leur front sur lequel il a été prononcé les mots suivants : « N’oubliez pas votre baptême et soyez reconnaissants. »
