Le 29 septembre 1238, après 18 mois de siège, les musulmans qui occupaient Valence capitulèrent devant le roi Jacques Ier d’Aragon, dit le Conquérant.
Le 9 octobre suivant, le roi fit procéder à la consécration de la grande mosquée qui avait été construite sur l’ancienne cathédrale wisigothique, qui fut ainsi rendue au culte catholique et dédiée à la Vierge Marie.
C’est en souvenir de cette journée du 9 octobre que se célèbre chaque année la fête aux « gloires valenciennes » (las Glorias valencianas). Un Te Deum y est chanté dans la cathédrale mais, depuis trois ans, les autorités municipales laïcistes – une alliance de l’extrême gauche, des socialistes et des indépendantistes catalans – se refusent d’y assister et même d’entrer dans la cathédrale : célébrer la libération de la ville de la domination musulmane, qui plus est dans une cathédrale, les insupporte…
Le cardinal Antonio Cañizares, archevêque de Valence, a présidé cette cérémonie et a précisé dans son homélie : « Nous célébrons avec une immense joie le rétablissement de la foi catholique à Valence, qui avait été éliminée de l’espace public sous la domination de l’envahisseur musulman ».
