Irak – La chaîne de télévision Al-Arabiya rapporte que l’aviation syrienne a lancé une série de frappes aériennes contre des cibles djihadistes de l’Etat islamique en Irak et au Levant (EIIL) sur le territoire frontalier irakien.
La ville d’Al-Kaïm, située à proximité de la frontière syrienne et occupée par les islamistes, a notamment fait l’objet de ces bombardements syriens. Ce raid aérien aurait fait une vingtaine de morts et des dizaines de blessés.
Les djihadistes se préparaient à attaquer la ville syrienne d’Al-Bukamal, proche de la frontière irakienne, et projetaient de s’emparer d’un point de passage de la frontière du côté syrien.
Les gouvernements de l’Irak et de la Syrie tentent de stopper l’offensive de l’EIIL, qui ambitionne de s’emparer d’un vaste territoire riche en pétrole. Depuis les trois dernières semaines, les commandos de l’EIIL, soutenus par les tribus sunnites et d’anciens militaires irakiens ont envahi plusieurs villes de l’Irak et des territoires situés à la frontière avec la Syrie et la Jordanie.
L’armée et la police irakiennes ont tenté sans succès de reprendre les territoires occupés par les djihadistes. Bagdad a sollicité l’aide militaire d’autres pays, notamment des Etats-Unis.
