L’Albanie s’est vu octroyer officiellement le statut de pays candidat. Les 28 États membres, réunis au niveau ministériel au sein du Conseil des Affaires générales (CAG) à Luxembourg, ont approuvé cette proposition de la Commission, qui récompense les progrès accomplis par le pays pour se rapprocher des normes politiques et économiques de l’Union. L’exécutif européen entend continuer d’utiliser la perspective d’adhésion comme un levier pour encourager les réformes démocratiques et judiciaires. « L’Albanie doit se concentrer sur ses priorités, notamment la réforme administrative et judiciaire, la lutte contre la corruption et le crime organisé, ainsi que les droits fondamentaux », insiste-t-il dans un communiqué. Le statut de pays candidat offrira à l’Albanie la possibilité de participer à une série de réunions politiques européennes, tout en continuant de bénéficier de fonds pré-adhésions. Il devrait encourager les investissements étrangers dans le pays. La prochaine étape pour Tirana sera d’obtenir le feu vert au lancement de négociations d’adhésions proprement dites. Celles-ci peuvent durer plusieurs années.
Il s’agit d’un pas supplémentaire dans la déchristianisation de l’Europe.
