Jean-Pierre Abel est le pseudonyme de René Château (1906-1970). Cet homme de gauche, initié au Grand Orient de France, élu député en 1936 sous l’étiquette du parti radical-socialiste, vote en 1940 les pleins pouvoirs au Maréchal Pétain puis devient directeur du quotidien La France socialiste. Arrêté par les FTP en 1944, il est détenu pendant 76 jours puis libéré. Il devient ensuite journaliste à La République du Sud-Ouest et professeur de philosophie dans un lycée de Versailles.
Ce livre est paru pour la première fois en 1947. L’auteur y conte les événements dont il a été le témoin : la Libération de Paris transformée en épuration, les arrestations arbitraires, les règlements de compte, les femmes tondues, déshabillées, humiliées, frappées, les résistants de la dernière heure jouissant de leur pouvoir, les interrogatoires musclés, les prisonniers torturés par les FTP, les viols, les exécutions sommaires, les pillages, le camp de Drancy,…
C’est l’autre Histoire, celle de la laideur humaine, qui vient ternir le discours officiel enseigné à l’école de la République.
