Les médicaments dits Bêtabloquants sont parmi les plus utilisés au monde en raison de leurs multiples intérêts thérapeutiques. Ils combattent l’hypertension artérielle, améliorent le fonctionnement des artères coronaires du cœur d’où leur importance au décours des infarctus du myocarde, sont actifs sur les troubles du rythme cardiaque. Tôt ou tard nous avons eu ou nous aurons affaire à ces produits pour notre plus grand bien. D’où l’idée simple de les prescrire systématiquement avant les interventions chirurgicales pour éviter les infarctus du myocarde dans les suites opératoires.

Or un article du 15 janvier dernier publié par l’European Heart Journal signé Darrel et Cole du Imperial College London est titré de cette manière : Medecine or Mass murder ? (Médecine ou meurtre en masse). Que dit le rapport de ces deux praticiens ? Les recommandations européennes de 2009 demandent d’utiliser les bêtabloquants préventivement dans le cadre des anesthésies. Ils estiment que cette directive est à l’origine de 800.000 morts, soit cinq fois la bombe d’Hiroshima. Selon ces médecins, cette pratique est responsable d’un nombre considérable d’accidents vasculaires cérébraux (AVC). Notamment en raison des doses colossales recommandées ; lesquelles seront injectées deux à trois heures avant l’intervention chirurgicale. En réalité en pratique des doses oscillant entre quatre et sept fois la dose initiale donnée lors des traitements prescrits dans l’insuffisance cardiaque. Le tout entraînant une brutale chute de tension responsable de l’AVC.

Selon le cardiologue François Philippe, de l’Institut Mutualiste Monsouris, de telles prescriptions ne peuvent se justifier que chez les hypertendus, ou les personnes à risque (tabagisme, insuffisants coronariens).

Cette affaire controversée est actuellement mise sous le boisseau en raison de ses conséquences terrifiantes sur le plan médico-légal. C’est en effet une bombe. Mais que nos lecteurs se rassurent. Cette controverse n’est pas tombée dans l’oreille de cardiologues ou d’anesthésistes sourds. En attendant que le scandale n’éclate, nous pouvons dormir sur nos deux oreilles. L’avenir nous dira si ce chiffre ahurissant de 800.000 décès est justifié. S’il l’est, les scandales du Médiator ou de la pilule ne seront que de touts petits faits divers.
