Un ours brun de Sibérie est devenu soldat pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Son histoire étonnante sera portée au cinéma l’année prochaine.

Wojtek était un ours brun de Syrie. Orphelin, il fut recueilli en Iran par des Polonais avant d’être intégré dans la 22ème compagnie d’artillerie. Il y côtoya pendant deux ans et demi un autre Wojtek. Aujourd’hui âgé de 93 ans, il est le dernier survivant de cette troupe.
Pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, Wojciech Narebski et d’autres soldats de la 22e compagnie polonaise d’artillerie devaient transporter de lourdes caisses de munitions. Heureusement, l’un d’entre eux était très costaud, le caporal Wojtek, ours brun de Syrie.

« Bien sûr, il a reçu sa récompense. Du miel, de la marmelade. Ses gourmandises préférées », ajoute ce vétéran qui a passé deux ans et demi avec l’aimable plantigrade, qui était pour lui « comme un frère ».

L’Ours Wojtek aimait également boire des bières et fumer (ou plutôt manger) des cigarettes, prendre des douches, faire de gros câlins et lutter amicalement contre d’autres soldats. Quand son adversaire perdait, il venait lécher son visage pour lui demander pardon.

Sur des photos de l’époque, on peut voir l’animal mesurant 1,80 m et pesant 220 kilos faire des câlins d’ours, ouvrir grand sa bouche pour avaler des friandises ou jouer sur la plage avec des soldats affichant tous de grands sourires joyeux.

Un film animé va retracer l’histoire incroyable de cet ours devenu la mascotte des Polonais de l’armée Anders qu’il accompagna dans leur périple à travers l’Irak, la Syrie, la Palestine, l’Egypte, l’Italie et jusqu’en Ecosse.

La coproduction polono-britannique « Un ours nommé Wojtek » (A Bear Named Wojtek) devrait sortir en 2020 pour le 75e anniversaire de la fin de la guerre.

Cet animal fut un vrai soldat. Il touchait une vraie solde, recevait des rations alimentaires, obtint le grade militaire de caporal, et acquit le statut officiel nécessaire pour pouvoir monter à bord du bateau qui l’emmena avec les soldats de la 22e compagnie d’Egypte en Italie.

« Les autorités du port sont strictes et rigoureuses à l’égard de l’ours et du singe », rapporte un soldat dans une chronique de la 22e Compagnie en 1944. « C’est seulement après une intervention auprès du haut commandement britannique au Caire que les autorités du port autorisent les animaux à monter à bord ».

« Cet ours a passé toute sa vie parmi les hommes, et il a pris leurs traits… Dans le corps d’un ours habitait l’esprit polonais », ajoute M. Narebski.

Il se rappelle qu’une fois, alors qu’ils étaient en Italie, sur la côte adriatique, l’ours a réussi à s’échapper et à piquer un sprint vers l’eau, effrayant au passage quelques estivants sur la plage.

« Il ne les a même pas regardés. Il faisait chaud et il a nagé un moment, secoué sa fourrure, et il est revenu vers nous ».

Après la guerre, Wojtek a été installé dans le zoo d’Edimbourg où il est mort à l’âge de 21 ans, en 1963. La BBC a alors annoncé « avec regret, la mort d’un célèbre soldat polonais ».
