Alain Sanders, journaliste et écrivain, est un passionné de l’histoire du continent américain.
En Europe, l’image de Jesse James est celle d’un bandit, pilleur de banques, de diligences et de trains. En vérité, Jesse James est d’abord un guérillero sudiste qui, la guerre de Sécession terminée, continua à frapper les intérêts yankees avec son frère Franck et d’autres.
Franck, le grand frère de Jesse, avait rejoint l’armée confédérée dès le début de la guerre, en 1861. A partir de 1862, les James, les Younger et tant d’autres Missouriens de convictions sudistes mènent une guérilla à travers l’Etat du Missouri, resté dans l’Union. Cette action clandestine perdure après la fin de la guerre, en 1865, et se caractérise par une succession de braquages légendaires. La bande James-Younger fait l’objet d’une véritable traque de la part des hommes de la Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency.
Alain Sanders nous raconte cette aventure plus complexe que l’image que nous en laissent quelques westerns du cinéma hollywoodien.
