En 2016, trois millions de citoyens roumains avaient déposé une requête pour changer la Constitution sur le thème de la famille. Le référendum demandait une clarification sur le mariage afin qu’il soit reconnu qu’il ne peut être contracté que par un homme et une femme.
En mai 2017, la Chambre approuvait cette modification de la Constitution :
« La famille est fondée sur le mariage par consentement mutuel entre un homme et une femme, leur pleine égalité, et le droit et le devoir des parents de garantir l’éducation et l’instruction des enfants. »
Maintenant les Roumains attendent le placet du sénat. Pour soutenir cette modification parlementaire, très prochainement se déroulera une manifestation populaire organisée par le parti social-démocrate. Les organisateurs pensent réunir environ un million de personnes.
