Amenés par l’immigration tant européenne (Irlandais, Polonais, Italiens) que latino-américaine (Cuba, Porto Rico, Mexique, Salvador…), les catholiques sont la première religion des Etats-Unis si ont compte séparément chaque église protestante, avec 23 % de la population, un chiffre relativement stable (le même qu’en 1962) oscillent année après année entre 23 et 25 % et ce dans une Amérique où la part des chrétiens est passée de 93 % en 1962 à 77,3 % en 2012.
Les zones d’influences de la religion catholique collent évidemment avec l’implantation des vagues d’immigration : Nouvelle-Angleterre (Irlandais), New-York et Grands Lacs (Italiens), Pennsylvanie (Polonais), états frontaliers avec le Mexique (Mexicains) et Floride (Cubains).
– 1 état compte plus de 40 % de catholiques : le petit Rhode Island (42 %), essentiellement des Irlandais.
– 5 états sont à plus de 30 % : le Massachussetts (34 %) dont Boston est la « capitale » des Irlando-américains, le New Jersey (34 %), le Nouveau-Mexique (34 %), le Connecticut (33 %) et New York (31 %).
– 18 états sont à plus de 20 % : la Californie (28 %), l’Illinois (28 %), le New Hampshire (26 %), le Nord Dakota (26 %), la Louisiane (26 %), le Nevada (25 %), le Wisconsin (25 %), la Pennsylvanie (24 %), le Texas (23 %), le Nebraska (23 %), le Delaware (22 %), le Dakota du Sud (22 %), le Minnesota (22 %), le Vermont (22 %), l’Arizona (21 %), la Floride (21 %), le Maine (21 %) et Hawaii (20 %).
– 17 sont à plus de 10 % : le Kansas (18 %), le Michigan (18 %), l’Iowa (18 %), l’Ohio (18 %), l’Indiana (18 %), le Washington (17 %), le Montana (17 %), l’Alaska (16 %), le Colorado (16 %), le Missouri (16 %), le Maryland (15 %), le Wyoming (14 %), l’Oregon (12 %), la Virginie (12 %), la Caroline du Sud (10 %), l’Idaho (10 %) et le Kentucky (10 %). Le District de Columbia, qui n’est pas un état, en compte pour sa part 19 %.
– Les 9 derniers états sont à moins de 10 % et sont des cas précis, à sa voir des bastions des églises protestantes : la Caroline du Nord (9 %), la Géorgie (9 %) ; l’Oklahoma (8 %), l’Arkansas (8 %), l’Alabama (7 %), le Tennessee (6 %), la Virginie occidentale (6 %), l’Utah, le fief des mormons (5 %) et le Mississipi, bastion évangélique (4 %).
La Fraternité Saint-Pie X compte aux Etats-Unis environ 90 prêtres et une centaine de lieux de cultes. Il est communément admis que le nombre de fidèles y est le second du monde derrière la France. En ce qui concerne les catholiques américains, rappelons qu’ils ont donné un Président (John Fitzgerald Kennedy), le plus grand joueur de baseball de tous les temps (George Herman « Babe » Ruth qui certes fut la vedette des Yankees de New York mais venait des Boston Red Sox) qu’ils possèdent la plus grande église d’Amérique du Nord (la cathédrale Saint-Patrick à New York, achevée en 1878)
