Nous sommes toujours dans les commémorations du centenaire de la Première guerre mondiale. Parmi les centaines de milliers d’hommes morts au combat en l’année 1914 figure Charles Péguy, tué d’une balle en pleine tête le 5 septembre 1914. « L’actualité de la pensée politique de Charles Péguy » fut le thème d’un colloque organisé au Sénat les 17 et 18 janvier 1914, dont le succès a encouragé à publier ce livre.
La dénonciation du règne de l’argent est un axe permanent de la pensée politique de Charles Péguy qui, sur d’autres sujets, évolua sensiblement. Et ce livre évoque inévitablement le cheminement d’un Péguy socialiste à un Péguy patriote, voire nationaliste. Par ailleurs, il n’est pas possible de parler de Péguy sans évoquer sa foi chrétienne. Avec Charles Péguy, c’est le couple mystique et politique qui suscite la curiosité de nombreux intellectuels.
On ne peut néanmoins s’empêcher de penser que certains des intervenants dont les textes se retrouvent dans ce livre consacré à la pensée politique de Charles Péguy ont une fâcheuse tendance à interpréter ses propos de façon anachronique et politiquement correcte. C’est hélas un peu la loi du genre.
