Jean-Pierre Le Goff est sociologue et auteur de plusieurs essais politiques.
La situation de la gauche en ce début du XXIe siècle n’est guère brillante. Le retrait de François Hollande qui a compris qu’il n’avait aucune chance d’être à nouveau président, n’y changera rien. Le parti socialiste est désormais miné par des contradictions internes qui peuvent conduire à sa fin. La gauche agonise et ce sont les fondamentaux de sa doctrine qui sont en question.
Ce livre entend montrer comment la gauche a pu en arriver là en examinant son évolution sur près d’un demi-siècle. Dans une première partie, il revient sur les principaux thèmes qui ont structuré son identité depuis le XIXe siècle, leur érosion et ce qui leur tient lieu de succédané pour restituer, dans une seconde partie, cette évolution dans un nouveau cours de l’histoire.
Jean-Pierre Le Goff revient aussi sur la définition et les principaux thèmes du gauchisme culturel et la façon dont il est présent au sein des médias et du gouvernement socialiste. Il s’emploie également à montrer comment une partie de la gauche a non seulement sous-estimé la montée de l’islamisme, mais a pratiqué le déni du réel et la stigmatisation au nom de la lutte contre l’islamophobie. Enfin, il souligne comment la gauche est devenue synonyme de haine de soi et de multiculturalisme, entretenant une dévalorisation de notre propre histoire s’accompagnant d’un angélisme et d’une fascination vis-à-vis des autres cultures du monde débouchant sur le modèle d’un « citoyen du monde » invertébré dont internet constituerait le réseau d’appartenance.
