Actuellement, environ deux millions de citoyens français vivent à l’étranger, dont 400 000 à Londres. Les pays les plus prisés par les expatriés français sont la Grande-Bretagne, la Suisse, les Etats-Unis, la Belgique et l’Allemagne.
Or, selon la « Commission d’enquête sur l’exil des forces vives de France » mise en place par l’Assemblée nationale, le nombre de Français souhaitant émigrer augmente chaque année de 2 %. Le député UMP Luc Chatel, membre de la commission d’enquête parlementaire, évoque « une mentalité anti-travail, la pression fiscale absurde, le chômage persistant, l’absence de perspectives d’évolution, et le poids de la dette sur les générations à venir » comme causes principales de cette tendance négative.
