Jean-Yves Boriaud, professeur émérite de langue et littérature latines à l’université de Nantes, est un spécialiste de la Rome de la Renaissance. Chez Perrin, il publie un livre consacré à la mythique fortune des Médicis.
Cet ouvrage nous dévoile notamment comment Cosme « l’Ancien » (1389-1464), pour assurer la « fortune » de la famille, réussit au prix d’une stratégie d’une grande habileté à écarter les consorterie susceptibles d’entraver sa marche pour imposer la prééminence de la banque Médicis à un moment où les troubles politiques brouillaient un peu partout les jeux du commerce au sein de l’Europe et sur ses marges, les armées turques faisant peser un danger imminent sur les voies de communication.
Cosme y mit certes de la violence, n’épargnant pas les mesures d’exil, mais sa stratégie fut d’ordinaire plus subtile : aux vieilles familles florentines, il laissa juste assez de lumière pour paraître « exister » encore et il leur abandonna ce qu’il fallait d’illusion de pouvoir pour qu’elles aient à cœur de siéger dans des instances politiques dévitalisées.
Mais au-delà de l’étude du système Médicis, ce sont toutes les tribulations de cette famille qui sont ici exposées.
