Voici les résultats officiels de la présidentielle en Autriche sans les votes par correspondances (source: http://wahl16.bmi.gv.at/)

Inscrits: 6 382 507
Votants: 3 876 942
Exprimés: 3 731 720
 
Norbert HOFER (FPO, nationaliste): 1 937 863 (51,9%)
Alexander VAN DER BELLEN (écologiste indépendant): 1 793 857 (48,1%).
 
Soit une avance provisoire de 144 006 voix pour Hofer.
 
La presse annonce plus de 880 000 votes par correspondance. Cela signifie que M. Norbert Hofer doit obtenir au moins 42% des suffages des votes par correspondance (et son adversaire pas plus de 58% de ces votes) pour pouvoir l’emporter.
 
Selon les résultats sans ces votes par correspondance, Hofer l’emporte dans 7 des 9 provinces du pays: il n’est battu que dans la province de Vorarlberg et sans surprise, dans celle de Vienne (seule province où il avait été devancé au 1er tour). 
 
De manière générale, Hofer l’emporte dans tous les districts (subdivisions des provinces, l’équivalent de nos départements) sauf dans ceux des capitales de provinces. La seule exception étant dans la province de Burgenland, où Hofer l’emporte même dans le district de la capitale (Eisenstadt). 
 
L’explication vraisemblable de cette carte électorale est que les électeurs d’origine non européenne sont d’une part, plus nombreux dans les districts des capitales de province et, d’autre part, moins enclins à voter pour un candidat nationaliste qui défend des traditions qu’ils ne connaissent ou ne comprennent pas, voire auxquelles ils sont hostiles.
 
A noter que le candidat du FPO est un homonyme de celui qu’on a surnommé le Chouan du Tyrol, Andreas HOFER. Celui-ci s’était révolté en 1809 en soulevant le Tyrol aux cotés de l’Autriche des Habsbourg contre les armées de Napoléon Ier et de la Bavière, qui était alors un Etat soumis à Napoléon Ier.
 
Simple paysan-aubergiste et père de famille, Andreas HOFER est nommé régent du Tyrol au nom des HABSBOURG, la célèbre dynastie catholique qui a formé patiemment et dirigé pendant plusieurs siècles l’Empire d’Autriche (appelé Empire d’Autriche-Hongrie de 1867 à 1918). 
 
Après la défaite de l’Autriche, le Tyrol combat plusieurs mois encore mais doit plier contre des ennemis beaucoup plus nombreux. Andreas Hofer est fusillé par les troupes de Napoléon Ier le 20 février 1810.
 
Le cri de ralliement d’Andreas Hofer était « Pour Dieu, l’empereur et la patrie ». L’empereur en question étant bien sûr celui de l’Empire d’Autriche.
