La star américaine du Basketball, Kobe Bryant, a annoncé devant la presse des États-Unis que, pendant la période la plus dure de sa carrière, c’est la foi catholique qui l’a permis de garder courage et de surmonter les difficultés.
Ce joueur professionnel qui appartient à l’Association Nationale du Basketball (NBA) a soutenu qu’il n’a jamais caché sa foi catholique. En effet, il est né au sein d’une famille catholique, et il a gardé la foi toute sa vie.
Sa femme, Vanessa Laine, est aussi catholique pratiquante. Actuellement, ils ont deux enfants qui ont été élevés dans la foi catholique également.
En 2003, sa vie a bousculé brusquement car il a été impliqué dans un scandale sexuel. En effet, Il a été accusé d’abus sexuel sur une jeune fille dans une chambre d’hôtel du Colorado. L’affaire a fait la une dans la presse internationale.
Kobe Bryant, qui dès le début a nié l’agression, a néanmoins reconnu publiquement qu’il avait eu des rapports sexuels hors mariage, et qu’il comprenait qu’il avait péché par adultère. Suite à ce scandale, ses sponsors l’ont abandonné, les ventes de ses t-shirts se sont effondrées et sa réputation a été souillée. Sa femme a aussi failli l’abandonner à cause du scandale.
Néanmoins, un an après, le juge a rejeté les accusations en déclarant que Kobe Bryant était innocent. Il a alors diffusé un communiqué dans lequel il demandait pardon à la jeune fille et à la famille de celle-ci. Il en a fait de même pour sa femme et sa famille. Il a demandé pardon publiquement pour avoir commis l’adultère.
Devant un entretien à la presse locale, il a soutenu fermement que c’est grâce à sa foi catholique qu’il a pu supporter toutes ces épreuves.
