En 1896, le peintre et illustrateur d’origine orléanaise Louis-Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1850-1913) publie un album pour enfants consacré à Jeanne d’Arc au succès tel qu’il sera rapidement traduit dans plusieurs langues et fera la renommée de son auteur jusqu’aux Etats-Unis.
Adaptées dans un cycle peint pour la basilique de Domrémy (inachevé ; MBA d’Orléans) puis pour le sénateur américain William Andrews Clark (National Gallery of Art de Washington), ces compositions ont fait l’objet d’études nombreuses, visibles dans les dessins acquis par le Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans en 2016.
Cette exposition-dossier revient sur la genèse de ce livre d’images qui a profondément marqué l’iconographie johannique.
