A peine un siècle, c’est le temps écoulé entre les premières opérations de la conquête, et le retrait des dernières forces françaises du Sud-Vietnam. Entre ces deux dates la France installe, puis perd sa domination sur les territoires des républiques actuelles du Vietnam, du Cambodge et du Laos. La Marine française joua dans cette aventure un rôle important, d’abord parce qu’elle fut le principal artisan de la conquête et du gouvernement des premières implantations ; ensuite parce que le ministère de la Marine fut également longtemps celui des Colonies. L’Indochine parue à ce point son domaine réservé qu’on parla longtemps de « l’Indochine des amiraux ».
Le Service historique de la Défense et l’institut de recherche IrAsia se proposent d’évoquer le rapport très particulier entre la Marine et la « perle de l’empire » à travers une présentation d’archives, d’images et d’objets conservés dans les collections et fonds d’archives du SHD.
