Cette université fondée sur l’ancien collège Saint Michel transformé en académie de droit en 1763 fut propulsé en 1889 au rang d’université Catholique sous l’impulsion des catholiques suisses. Elle y accueillera en 1890 une faculté de Théologie.
Elle bénéficiera en 1949 d’une dotation d’un demi million de Francs grâce à l’engagement des évêques à procurer ces fonds par des quêtes auprès des fidèles dans les églises à la condition qu’elle conserve son caractère d’université Catholique.
C’est sur le site de la Miséricorde qui abrite en son sein l’institut de Théologie que l’auteur et promotrice des études pseudo-scientifiques de la théorie du genre sera accueillie et y recevra le titre de docteur honoris causa.
En 2011, c’est à l’université de Bordeaux, où des étudiants étaient spécialement venus la féliciter, que Judith Butler avait déjà reçu ce titre.
