Iouri Annenkov (1889-1974), personnage complexe, fut peintre, dessinateur et écrivain. Mais aussi décorateur. Il réalisa également des costumes pour le cinéma.
Ce fils d’un révolutionnaire proche de l’organisation terroriste La volonté du peuple connut la prison, le bagne et l’exil. Enfant, Annenkov a rencontré Lénine à la datcha familiale. Il le retrouvera en France et se verra commander en 1921 un portrait du chef bolchévique. En 1913, ses œuvres sont exposées pour une manifestation avant-gardiste à Paris, où il séjourne. Il regagne la Russie peu avant la Première Guerre mondiale. En 1924, nouveau départ : il quitte à jamais la Russie. En émigration, Annenkov continuera à croquer inlassablement les personnalités du monde des arts qui croisent son chemin : Ehrenbourg, A. Tolstoï, Gide, Cocteau, Gérard Philippe, Jean-Louis Barrault,…
Cycle de tragédies, tel est le sous-titre qu’Annenkov donne au journal de ses rencontres et, de fait, elles sont innombrables : suicides d’Essenine, de Maïakovski, de Piast. Gorki est empoisonné. Goumilev, Pilniak, Babel, Meyerhold sont fusillés, Blok, Zochtchenko et Pasternak meurent de chagrin et d’épuisement. Zamiatine fait l’objet d’une chasse à l’homme avant d’obtenir le droit d’émigrer. Victimes de tracasseries sans nombre, mis au ban de la vie publique, certains courbent l’échine ou se réfugient dans le silence (Akhmatova, Malevitch, Poudovkine). D’autres, enfin, choisissent l’émigration avec toutes les difficultés qu’implique l’exil.
