Saint Urbain V – Pape et Confesseur

Le bienheureux Urbain V, qui fut un des Papes d’Avignon (en 1370), mérita beaucoup de l’Église par le rétablissement du Siège Apostolique à Rome, par l’union des Grecs avec les Latins, et par son zèle dans la lutte contre les Infidèles. Pie IX approuva et confirma son culte déjà très ancien.

Martyrologe

En Mauritanie, saint Timothée diacre. Après un long emprisonnement enduré pour la foi du Christ, il fut jeté dans le feu, où il consomma son martyre.

A Alexandrie, le bienheureux Némèse martyr. D’abord accusé par calomnie d’avoir volé, il fut déféré au juge qui le renvoya absous; peu après, durant la persécution de Dèce, il fut dénoncé comme chrétien devant le juge émilien: celui-ci le soumit deux fois à la torture, puis le fit brûler avec des brigands, le rendant par là semblable au Sauveur, qui fut crucifié entre deux larrons.

A Nicée, en Bithynie, les saints martyrs Darius, Zosime, Paul et Second.

A Nicomédie, les saints Cyriaque, Paulille, Second, Anastase, Syndime et leurs compagnons martyrs.

A Gaza, en Palestine, la passion des saintes Meuris et Thée.

A Rome, la mise au tombeau du pape saint Anastase Ier, homme d’une très riche pauvreté et d’une sollicitude toute apostolique. Rome, dit saint Jérôme, ne méritait pas de le posséder longtemps, car il ne convenait pas que la capitale du monde fût décapitée sous un tel pontife: et en effet, très peu de temps après sa mort, la ville fut prise et saccagée par les Goths.

A Auxerre, saint Grégoire, évêque et confesseur.

A Orléans, en Gaule, saint Adjut abbé, illustre par le don de prophétie.

A Rome, sainte Fausta, mère de sainte Anastasie, célèbre par sa noblesse et sa piété.

A Avignon, le Bienheureux pape Urbain V. Ayant rétabli à Rome le Siège Apostolique, accompli l’union des Grecs et des Latins, réprimé les infidèles, il a bien mérité de l’église. Le souverain pontife Pie IX a ratifié et confirmé le culte qui lui était rendu de longue date.
