Plusieurs médias israéliens font en ce moment écho à deux articles, l’un du journaliste B. Judah, dans le Jewish Chronicle, et l’autre de l’inénarrable Bernard-Henri Levy dans Le Point, au sujet du rôle du général juif indien Jack Jacob dans la naissance de l’Etat musulman du Bangladesh.

Jack Jacob (1924-2016) était un séfarade de Calcutta, dont la famille était originaire de Bagdad (Irak).

En 1971, alors que le Pakistan a de sérieux problèmes avec une de ses régions sécessionniste qui deviendra le Bangladesh, l’Inde voisine décide de s’en mêler. L’armée indienne envahit une partie du Pakistan pour soutenir les séparatistes bengalais.

 

Selon les propres dires du général Jack Jacob, publiés dans son livre, alors que l’armée indienne se dirigeait vers la capitale pakistanaise, il aurait pris un avion, jusqu’à Dacca, sans en avertir ses supérieurs, pour une négociation avec le général Niazi, chef d’état-major de l’armée pakistanaise.

Le général Jacob aurait alors obtenu l’indépendance pour le Bangladesh sur un coup de bluff : il aurait fait croire à l’état-major pakistanais que l’armée indienne entrée au Pakistan était beaucoup plus nombreuse qu’elle ne l’était en réalité, concluant que la seule façon pour le Pakistan de s’en sortir était de mettre fin à cette guerre en accordant l’indépendance au Bangladesh. En cas de refus, il aurait menacé de raser la capitale pakistanaise à coups de bombardements.

Le récit semble assez romanesque. D’autres officiers indiens considèrent le général Jacob comme un mégalomane ayant toujours voulu tirer la couverture à soi. Mais il n’en reste pas moins qu’il a joué un rôle essentiel dans l’indépendance du Bangladesh.

Après sa carrière militaire, il a fait de la politique et a été nommé gouverneur de Goa puis gouverneur de Punjab. Sans surprise, l’une de ses priorités était l’amélioration des relations entre l’Inde et Israël.

Il a également soutenu l’achat par l’Inde de matériels militaires israéliens, en particulier l’achat de missiles israéliens «Arrow», et le partenariat entre les services secrets israéliens et indiens.
