Elle est morte le 4 septembre à Brescia et le rapport des experts vient d’être partiellement dévoilé par la presse. Il est accablant. D’après les experts sollicités par le Procureur de Trente, le lien entre la présence de quelques immigrés atteints de malaria dans l’hôpital de Trente et la contamination de la petite Sofia est vérifié.
Au cours du séjour pendant lequel Sofia était hospitalisée, deux enfants africains étaient présents dans le même hôpital, traités pour la malaria. En plus des deux enfants africains soignés en pédiatrie, étaient hospitalisés dans un service pour adultes leur mère ainsi qu’un frère plus âgé. Et c’est probablement une erreur médicale commise pendant un prélèvement de sang qui a contaminé la petite Sofia. Les experts estiment probable que le sang d’un des deux enfants africains a contaminé celui de Sofia. Un incident fatal, survenu par le biais d’une aiguille infectée.
C’est ce qui explique pourquoi la souche du parasite, le Plasmodium falciparum qui a tué Sofia, est identique à celle des deux enfants africains.
