Le chef d’état-major interarmes américain Joseph Dunford était en visite en Israël jeudi dernier.
Le général Dunford a rencontré le ministre israélien de la Défense Moshe Ya’alon afin d’évoquer le « renforcement des liens de défense et militaires » entre Israël et les Etats-Unis, selon le communiqué.
A cette occasion, le ministre israélien a qualifié les Etats-Unis de « plus solide allié » d’Israël.
Précisons qu’Israël est le principal bénéficiaire de l’aide financière militaire des Etats-Unis, recevant près de trois milliards de dollars par an.
Les deux pays sont aussi partenaires dans le développement de systèmes de défense, tels que la batterie anti-missile Dôme de Fer et les missiles intercepteurs Arrow. Le ministre Ya’alon a annoncé la signature imminente d’un nouvel accord d’aide militaire sur dix ans.
Sous le nom de code Juniper Cobra 16 a eu lieu fin février en Israël un exercice conjoint entre les deux armées. Il s’agissait du huitième exercice d’une série biennale entre les deux pays, débutée en 2001, selon l’armée israélienne.
