Irlande – Un homme d’affaire pakistanais du nom de Mohammed Aslam a l’intention d’acheter un couvent historique protégé à Co Roscommon et d’en faire une mosquée.
L’affaire suscite la polémique sur place. Le couvent de St Mary’s à Ballaghadereen a été construit en 1876 mais est inoccupé depuis 20 ans. La propriété doit être mise aux enchères sous peu, avec un prix de réserve de 50 000 €. Mais les acheteurs ne se bousculent pas.
L’ancien conseiller municipal Michael Scally a tiré la sonnette d’alarme en apprenant que ce lieu de culte catholique pourrait bientôt être transformé en mosquée. «J’aurais préféré que le diocèse local ou les religieuses ou la communauté catholique prennent l’initiative de l’acheter ou de le restaurer et de le transformer en maison de retraite ou un lieu de convalescence pour les religieux à la retraite», a-t-il déclaré aux médias.
