Le Monde Afrique a publié un entretien avec le sociologue des religions au CNRS, Sébastien Fath, l’un des coordinateurs du dossier de la revue Afrique contemporaine sur « les nouveaux christianismes en Afrique ».
Il y est notamment fait état des liens étroits entre le Pape François et les milieux protestants évangélistes :
Le pape François se déplacera en Afrique en novembre. Peut-on y voir une inquiétude vis-à-vis du succès de l’évangélisme ?
En Afrique, il a parfaitement conscience de la montée en puissance de l’évangélisme, qui recrute la clientèle habituelle du catholicisme. Il veut limiter cette offensive-là en internalisant un certain nombre de pratiques évangéliques, en les validant, avec comme stratégie de récupérer dans un second temps les déçus de l’évangélisme. Mais le pape François a aussi une réelle appétence pour certaines caractéristiques évangéliques. Il a fait de nombreux gestes en leur sens et a beaucoup d’amis évangéliques d’ailleurs, contrairement à son prédécesseur. Il n’est pas juste dans une stratégie de compétition, mais surtout d’alliance, dans une perspective de christianisme contre culturelle qui résiste à un mouvement de sécularisation et au consumérisme de la société. Il est donc clair qu’il souhaite ramener chez lui d’ex-catholiques tombés dans l’évangélisme, mais pas seulement.
