La «présidence» d’Edith Wilson a débuté en octobre 1919 pour se poursuivre jusqu’en 1921, après que son mari, le 28e président américain, Woodrow Wilson, ait subi un grave accident vasculaire cérébral. Il resta paralysé du côté gauche, à peine capable de parler. Ce n’était pas une prise de pouvoir. Edith voulut simplement garder son mari en vie.
Le médecin du président, le Dr Francis Dercum, avait dit à Edith que tout stress pourrait tuer son mari. Elle se mit alors à signer du nom de son mari toutes sortes de correspondances et de textes législatifs, même, si, ayant reçu peu d’instruction, elle avait la calligraphie « d’une enfant ».
Edith Bolling était née pauvre, dans une petite ville de Virginie. Elle voulait désespérément sortir de cette vie provinciale sans envergure. Elle épousa donc un ancien propriétaire de bijouterie nommé Galt. À la mort de celui-ci, le magasin de bijoux était profondément endetté. Elle travailla dur pour le ramener à flot. Alors qu’elle se promenait à Washington, DC, la veuve fut repérée par le Président Woodrow Wilson, qui passait en limousine. Ils se marièrent en octobre 1915.
Wilson était terriblement seul, ayant juste perdu sa première femme. On le pensait austère, académicien froid et distant. Il ne l’était pas. Il se montra très romantique avec Edith, de quinze ans sa cadette. Celle-ci était une femme « moderne ». Avant de rencontrer Wilson, elle avait acheté une automobile électrique, devenant la première femme à obtenir un permis de conduire dans le District de Columbia. Edith et Woodrow Wilson furent très vite complices, même dans les affaires d’état. Avant même leur mariage, Wilson lui parlait des problèmes de gouvernement et lui confiait les codes secrets.
Cette présidence de la femme d’un des présidents américains est une des grandes histoires cachées de la politique américaine. À l’époque, il n’y avait pas de radio, pas de télévision, et les paparazzis n’existaient pas.
La Première Guerre mondiale avait pris fin, les suffragettes américaines se battaient pour le droit de vote, certaines s’enchaînant aux portes de la Maison-Blanche, sans savoir qu’Edith, qui n’admirait pas le mouvement féministe, dirigeait le gouvernement.
