Louis Veuillot (1813-1883), écrivain et journaliste est une référence dans le combat catholique anti-libéral. Directeur du journal L’Univers, il s’y révéla un polémiste redouté, combattant la bourgeoisie orléaniste et voltairienne, puis prenant position contre la politique impériale anti-catholique de Napoléon III au point de voir son journal supprimé en 1860. Cela permit le retour de l’homme de lettres qui publia de nouveaux ouvrages jusqu’en 1867, année où renaît L’Univers. L’Eglise l’a glorifié comme l’un de ses grands serviteurs.
Ce volume est constitué de nouvelles, de portraits et de courts récits. Il se partage en six parties : les appels de Dieu (avec de très belles pages sur ce que c’est qu’un curé), contes de Bretagne, histoires et légendes de Suisse, les conquérants de l’Algérie, les pauvres gens et historiettes. Si les thèmes abordés peuvent, de premier abord, sembler disparates, cette variété permettra au lecteur qui n’a jamais lu Louis Veuillot d’en découvrir les multiples talents d’écrivain.
