Ce samedi, Robert Ménard, maire de Béziers, a débaptisé la rue du 19-Mars-1962, pour la renommer rue commandant Hélie Denoix de Saint-Marc.
La décision a été validée par le conseil municipal le 11 décembre dernier. Le maire veut ainsi « effacer la honte du 19 mars 1962 » qui est « une insulte à la fois aux Français d’Algérie et aux Harkis ». Le maire de Béziers entend également « rendre hommage à un héros ».
Hélie Denoix de Saint Marc, né le 11 février 1922, avait rejoint la Résistance en 1941, à l’âge de 19 ans. En 1943, il avait été arrêté et déporté au camp de Buchenwald.
Après la seconde guerre mondial, Hélie de Saint Marc était entré à l’Ecole spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr.
En 1948, le jeune officier Hélie de Saint Marc part une première fois en Indochine avec le 3e REI. Il y retourne une seconde fois en 1951, avec le 2e BEP.
Cet officier exemplaire a bien sûr participé à la guerre d’Algérie et, en avril 1961, il rejoint avec le 1er REP le général Challe et le putsch d’Alger, ce qui lui vaut ensuite un procès et cinq ans de prison à Tulle avant d’être gracié le 25 décembre 1966.
Réhabilité dans ses droits civils et militaires en 1978, le commandant Hélie de Saint Marcest fait grand-croix de la Légion d’Honneur le 28 novembre 2011 par Nicolas Sarkozy, président de la République.
Hélie de Saint Marc est décédé le 26 août 2013. Les honneurs militaires lui ont été rendus lors de ses obsèques.
Manuel Valls a cru utile, en ce jour où Béziers rend hommage au Commandant de Saint Marc, d’évoquer un climat « rance ».
Une injure immédiatement dénoncée par de nombreux anciens combattants.
