C’est avec une vive émotion et une profonde tristesse que j’ai appris le rappel à Dieu de mon ami Michel Sénéchal le saint jour de Pâques.
J’avais la chance de le rencontrer souvent car il était mon voisin. Il avait acheté l’ancienne demeure de mes cousins Chevallier et il me suffisait de traverser la rue Auguste Godard pour aller lui rendre visite.
C’était un homme profondément gentil et aimable. Il avait un très joli sourire qui reflétait toute la douceur de son âme. Ténor et comédien virtuose, il avait une voix très pure, claire et bien timbrée. Véritable monument de l’Opéra français, il me confiait souvent qu’il avait eu une chance incroyable dans sa vie de connaître une si brillantissime carrière musicale.
Né en 1927 à Paris, il entre dans la classe de Gabriel Paulet au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris où il obtient un premier prix de chant. Il fait ses débuts sur scène en 1950 à La Monnaie de Bruxelles où il réside pendant trois ans.
Après un 1er prix au Concours de Genève en 1952, il est engagé au Festival international d’art lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence où il interprète les grands rôles mozartiens et rossiniens pendant 23 années.
Il se produit par la suite très régulièrement à l’Opéra de Paris, à l’Opéra-Comique, au théâtre du Châtelet ainsi qu’au festival de Salzbourg où il chante sous la direction d’Herbert von Karajan. Michel Sénéchal avait une admiration toute particulière pour ce grand chef dont il avait un portrait dédicacé qu’il aimait montrer avec fierté.
Parallèlement à sa carrière de chanteur, Michel Sénéchal se consacre à l’enseignement et dirige l’école de chant de l’opéra jusqu’en 1994.
Profondément attaché à la langue française, il fonde et préside avec le chef d’orchestre Georges Prêtre l’association « L’Art du chant français » qui défend le patrimoine lyrique et la tradition du chant français.
Michel Sénéchal termine sa vie paisiblement à Taverny, ville qu’il chérissait tout particulièrement.
Quel beau symbole que de disparaître la nuit de Pâques, cette nuit où le Christ a vaincu la mort.
Que Michel Sénéchal repose en paix, et qu’il chante désormais pour l’éternité la gloire de Dieu.
