Georges Minois, historien français, est l’auteur de nombreux livres, notamment consacrés à la période médiévale.
Voici le récit d’une époque qui s’étale sur mille cent ans. On a coutume d’y distinguer trois étapes. Du Vème au Xème siècle, alors qu’en Occident les royaumes barbares se débattent pour se faire une place dans l’espace de l’ancien Empire romain, l’Orient prend un nouvel essor, avec Byzance, puis avec les califats de Damas et de Bagdad. De 1000 à 1300, c’est la grande époque de la chrétienté sous la direction de la papauté triomphante, et du grand combat contre l’islam. De 1300 à 1500, ce sont les grands assauts de la peste, de la guerre et de la famine et la transition vers un nouveau monde.
Georges Minois a voulu rédiger une nouvelle histoire du Moyen Âge pour y incorporer les acquis récents, mais surtout pour réagir contre les vulgarisations déformantes et le sabotage programmé de l’enseignement de l’histoire. Il s’agit de rappeler ce que fut ce millénaire médiéval, ses grandeurs et ses misères, politiquement, économiquement, socialement, culturellement, en suivant ce qui est la colonne vertébrale de l’histoire : la chronologie.
Le lecteur est transporté dans une société médiévale qui sut combiner un idéal de foi et de raison.
L’héritage du Moyen Âge est colossal, dans tous les domaines. Ce livre vient à point pour nous en faire prendre conscience.
